Introduction

The reason the Rendlesham Forest incident is so often linked to RAF Bentwaters, even though the first reported events occurred near RAF Woodbridge, lies in the unusual relationship between the two bases. During the Cold War they were separate airfields on the map, but in daily military practice they functioned as a single American-operated complex known as the “Twin Bases”. This arrangement made it easy for outsiders, journalists, former personnel and later UFO writers to treat Bentwaters and Woodbridge almost interchangeably. As a result, a sighting reported beside Woodbridge became widely remembered under the Bentwaters name. Twin Bases illustration 1 Understanding that twin-base relationship helps explain a long-standing source of confusion in Rendlesham discussions. The label “Bentwaters incident” is not entirely wrong, but it is less geographically precise than many readers assume. The mystery became attached to a military community that spanned two neighbouring installations rather than to a single airfield. How Bentwaters and Woodbridge worked together

RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge were built as separate airfields, but by the late 1950s the United States Air Force formally operated them as a combined organisation. Historical records from the Bentwaters Cold War Museum state that from 8 July 1958 Woodbridge was run as a “twin base” with Bentwaters under the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing. [bcwm.org.uk]bcwm.org.ukThe Bentwaters Cold War MuseumBeginning on 8 July 1958, Woodbridge was operated as “twin base” (twin… Bentwaters under the 81st Tactic…Published: July 1958

This was more than a symbolic partnership. The two airfields shared command structures, personnel, operational planning and support functions. The 81st Tactical Fighter Wing used both locations, and later accounts from the U.S. Air Force describe the organisation as the largest fighter wing in U.S. Air Forces in Europe, operating multiple squadrons across both bases. For service members stationed in Suffolk, the distinction between the two installations could be less important than it appears decades later. People worked across the complex, units were associated with both locations, and official histories often discuss Bentwaters and Woodbridge together as a single Cold War military entity. The Bentwaters Cold War Museum itself describes its mission as preserving the history of the “Twin Bases” rather than treating them as entirely separate stories. This organisational reality created the foundation for the later naming issue. When unusual events occurred in the forest between and around the installations, observers naturally associated them with the broader twin-base complex rather than with a strict airfield boundary. Why outsiders used the Bentwaters name

Although the initial sightings were reported from the vicinity of Woodbridge’s East Gate, Bentwaters often became the public-facing name. Several mechanisms helped produce this shift.

First, Bentwaters frequently served as the better-known identifier. In military histories, aviation publications and later Cold War retrospectives, Bentwaters often appeared as the principal headquarters location of the 81st Fighter Wing. That prominence made it a convenient shorthand for the wider installation. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRAF BentwatersRAF Bentwaters

Second, official communication channels linked the bases together. One of the most important documents in the case, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt’s memorandum, was written by the Deputy Base Commander at RAF Woodbridge and sent to the RAF Liaison Officer at RAF Bentwaters. Later parliamentary discussions about the incident referenced that Bentwaters connection directly. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukHansard Rendlesham Forest/Raf Bentwaters IncidentRendlesham Forest/Raf Bentwaters Incident - Hansard30 Jan 2001 — Lt Col Halt USAF, Deputy Base Commander at RAF Woodbridge, to the…

Third, witnesses and officials themselves often described their environment in twin-base terms. Contemporary and retrospective accounts regularly refer to personnel from “Bentwaters and Woodbridge” rather than presenting two isolated installations. Even the public affairs structure covered both locations; contemporary records identify officials serving the twin bases collectively. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comOpen source on ianridpath.com.

The result was a gradual simplification in public memory. A complicated description—“an incident in Rendlesham Forest near the East Gate of RAF Woodbridge, part of the Bentwaters-Woodbridge complex”—was often shortened to “the Bentwaters UFO incident” or “the RAF Bentwaters incident”. What the twin-base label clarifies and confuses

The twin-base label is useful because it reflects the actual military structure of the period. The forest lay beside a connected U.S. Air Force presence, not two unrelated airfields. References to Bentwaters can therefore accurately point to the broader command environment in which the events occurred. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident

At the same time, the label can blur geography. The best-known accounts place the first observations near Woodbridge’s eastern perimeter, where security personnel reported lights in or beyond the forest. Readers who encounter only the Bentwaters name may incorrectly assume that the reported activity began at Bentwaters itself. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident

The distinction also affects how later evidence is interpreted. Some discussions focus on Bentwaters’ Cold War reputation, strategic importance or association with high-security military operations. While those factors form part of the wider setting, they do not change the basic location of the initial reports near Woodbridge. The twin-base framework explains why both names legitimately appear in the story without making them geographically identical. In practical terms, the Bentwaters label survives because the Rendlesham case unfolded within a combined military community. The mystery became attached not simply to a forest and not solely to Woodbridge, but to the interconnected Bentwaters–Woodbridge complex that Cold War personnel themselves knew as the Twin Bases.
