Introduction

The short answer is no. Official Ministry of Defence (MoD) records confirm that Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt reported radiation readings during the Rendlesham Forest investigation, but the available files do not show that the MoD verified those readings, commissioned a technical analysis, or concluded that abnormal radiation was present. The radiation claim therefore occupies an unusual position in the case: it appears in the primary incident report, yet it was never formally validated by the British authorities responsible for reviewing the report. Mo D Records illustration 1 This distinction matters because discussions of Rendlesham often treat the radiation measurements as established physical evidence. The documentary record supports a narrower conclusion. The readings were reported; they were preserved in official files; but no surviving MoD assessment confirms that they indicated anything unusual, hazardous, or unexplained. What the Official Record Confirms

The key document is Halt’s memorandum of 13 January 1981, commonly known as the “Halt Memo”, which was sent to the MoD after the events in Rendlesham Forest. In that memorandum, Halt reported that radiation measurements had been taken at the site where personnel believed an object might have landed. He recorded beta/gamma readings associated with three ground depressions and noted additional readings on a nearby tree. The memorandum itself is unquestionably part of the official record. The National Archives identifies it as the central document relating to the incident, preserved within file DEFE 24/1948. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukdefe 241948The National ArchivesDEFE 24/1948Memo from the Ministry of Defence concerning the UFO sighting at Rendlesham Forest. Find out more about…

What is important for the radiation question is that the official record contains a report of measurements, not a scientific finding. The memo records what Halt and his team believed they observed in the field. It does not contain laboratory results, environmental surveys, calibration records, expert interpretation, or a formal conclusion that radiation levels were abnormal. [Wikimedia Commons]commons.wikimedia.orgCommons File:Halt Memorandum.jpgWikimedia CommonsFile:Halt Memorandum.jpg - Wikimedia CommonsEnglish: Memorandum by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt to the British Minist…

In other words, the surviving documentation confirms that readings were reported. It does not confirm that those readings were independently verified.

What the MoD Did Not Assess

The strongest evidence on this point comes from later parliamentary exchanges and released government files.

In 1997, the government stated in the House of Lords that the memorandum had been reviewed by MoD staff responsible for air-defence matters. Their judgement was that the report contained nothing of defence significance, and no further action was taken. The same ministerial answer explicitly stated: “There is no record of any official assessment of the radiation readings reported by Lieutenant Colonel Halt.” [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukLieutenant Colonel Charles Halt: Memorandum - Hansard14 Oct 1997 — There is no record of any official assessment of the radiation…

That statement is significant because it addresses the radiation issue directly. It does not say that an assessment was performed and lost. It does not say that experts examined the data and found an anomaly. Instead, it states that no official assessment is recorded. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukLieutenant Colonel Charles Halt: Memorandum - Hansard14 Oct 1997 — There is no record of any official assessment of the radiation…

A later parliamentary answer in 2001 reinforced the picture of limited official engagement. The government stated that the only USAF material held by the MoD was Halt’s memorandum and that it had no evidence of any other official investigation or documentation. It further noted that there was no indication the MoD raised follow-up questions with Halt after receiving the report. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukHansard Rendlesham Forest IncidentRendlesham Forest Incident - Hansard - UK Parliament16 Oct 2001 — There is no indication from the papers held on file that MoD rai…

Taken together, these records suggest that the radiation readings were never elevated into a formal technical inquiry within the British defence bureaucracy. The MoD appears to have treated them as part of a report that lacked defence implications rather than as evidence requiring specialised scientific investigation. Why the Incident Was Not Pursued

The MoD’s handling of Rendlesham followed a broader policy approach to UFO reports during that period. The department’s interest was not primarily scientific; it was defensive. Officials generally examined reports to determine whether they indicated a threat to UK airspace, evidence of hostile technology, or some issue affecting national security. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National ArchivesUFO reportsA note in response to a Parliamentary Question confirmed that there was nothing of defence interest in th…

According to official summaries released through The National Archives, the department concluded that the alleged sighting had no defence significance. A parliamentary response similarly stated that there was nothing of defence interest in the report and that no further investigation followed. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National ArchivesUFO reportsA note in response to a Parliamentary Question confirmed that there was nothing of defence interest in th…

From that institutional perspective, radiation readings—even if intriguing—would not necessarily trigger extensive analysis unless they suggested a defence-related hazard or intelligence concern. The absence of a radiation assessment therefore reflects an administrative decision about priority and relevance, not necessarily a judgement about whether the readings were scientifically meaningful. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukLieutenant Colonel Charles Halt: Memorandum - Hansard14 Oct 1997 — There is no record of any official assessment of the radiation…

Why Absence of Investigation Cuts Both Ways

The lack of an official assessment is often interpreted in two opposing ways.

Supporters of the extraordinary-event interpretation argue that the absence of follow-up means the radiation evidence was never properly examined. In their view, the case remains unresolved precisely because no government body conducted the type of environmental investigation that could have confirmed or refuted the significance of the readings. Without such work, they argue, the radiation question remains open. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukHansard Rendlesham Forest IncidentRendlesham Forest Incident - Hansard - UK Parliament16 Oct 2001 — There is no indication from the papers held on file that MoD rai…

Sceptics draw the opposite conclusion. They note that the only documented evidence consists of field observations reported by witnesses and that no official technical review ever found anything unusual. From this perspective, the radiation claim remains unverified because the available record never progressed beyond the reporting stage. [Hansard]hansard.parliament.ukLieutenant Colonel Charles Halt: Memorandum - Hansard14 Oct 1997 — There is no record of any official assessment of the radiation…

Both interpretations begin from the same documentary fact: there is no known MoD record showing that the reported readings were scientifically confirmed. The disagreement concerns what that absence means.

What Can Be Said With Confidence

Several points are well supported by the official record:

As a result, the radiation claim remains a reported observation rather than a verified finding. The official files preserve the claim, but they do not validate it. That distinction is central to understanding why the radiation issue continues to be debated within the broader Rendlesham Forest controversy.
