Where the Lighthouse Was in Relation to the Forest
Orford Ness lighthouse stood on the Suffolk coast east of Rendlesham Forest. Contemporary descriptions place it roughly five to six miles from the area where the patrols reported seeing unusual lights. The distance is important because it created a perception trap. During daylight, a person can usually judge whether a light source is nearby or several miles away by using surrounding landmarks.
