Introduction
Charles Halt’s night in Rendlesham Forest is the point at which the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident stops being only a story told by security patrolmen and becomes a senior-officer investigation with a live audio record. Halt, then deputy base commander at the USAF-used RAF Woodbridge/Bentwaters complex, went into the forest with several personnel after earlier reports of unusual lights and alleged ground traces. His party checked the supposed landing site, took radiation readings, examined tree marks, crossed fields, and reported red and star-like lights in the sky. The recording matters because it preserves confusion, excitement, instrument readings and direction calls as they happened; it does not, by itself, prove what the lights were. The central tension is therefore evidential: Halt’s tape and memo are unusually strong records for a UFO case, but they also contain ambiguities that sceptical researchers have used to argue for misidentified ordinary lights. Why Halt Entered the Forest
Halt’s later forest investigation followed the earlier reports from USAF security personnel who had gone outside the back gate of RAF Woodbridge after seeing unusual lights. His 13 January 1981 memo, headed “Unexplained Lights”, stated that patrolmen first thought an aircraft might have crashed or been forced down, then reported a strange glowing object in the forest. The memo also recorded that, the next day, three shallow depressions were found where the object was said to have been seen, and that the area was later checked for radiation. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
That is the immediate reason Halt’s role became so important. He was not simply retelling barrack-room rumour; he went to the alleged site with equipment and personnel, and he later sent a formal memorandum up the chain. The National Archives identifies the Rendlesham material as correspondence on the incident, notes that Halt reported seeing lights near the rear gate, and says servicemen investigated the forest on two separate nights. It also records the official UK position that there was “nothing of defence interest” in the alleged sighting and that no further Ministry of Defence investigation took place. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National Archives UFO reportsThe National ArchivesUFO reports - The National Archives…
The timing is one of the first complications. Halt’s memo gives the second investigation as the following night, “29 Dec 80”, but later reconstructions commonly place the tape-recorded field trip in the early hours of 28 December, after the evening of 27 December. Even a source sympathetic to the case’s significance notes that the first and second incidents have long been understood as dated incorrectly in the memo. This matters because the memo is official and valuable, but it was written more than two weeks after the events and was not a minute-by-minute log. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
What Halt’s Party Reported
The first part of Halt’s recorded investigation was not a dramatic sky sighting. It was a ground search. The party moved around the suspected impact or landing area, struggled with lighting equipment, examined the three “pod” impressions, and tried to obtain Geiger counter readings. On the transcript, Halt asks what sort of readings they are getting; the answer at first is “minor clicks”. The men then move between the indentations, the centre of the triangle, nearby trees and the surrounding area. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
The reported physical evidence on Halt’s night falls into four main categories:
Ground impressions. The memo says three depressions, each about 1½ inches deep and 7 inches in diameter, were found where the object had allegedly been sighted. On the tape, Halt appears underwhelmed at first, asking whether that is all the bigger the impressions are. That reaction is important because it sounds less like someone confirming an obvious landing mark and more like someone trying to interpret small, ambiguous marks in darkness. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
Radiation readings. Halt’s memo states that beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgens were recorded, with peak readings in the depressions and near the centre of the triangle, and that a nearby tree showed moderate readings on the side facing the depressions. The tape transcript is messier: it records “minor clicks”, “three to four units”, a jump towards “seven tenths”, and later slight readings in the fields. Ian Ridpath, an astronomy writer and prominent sceptical investigator of the case, argues from the tape that these were low, variable background-level readings rather than a clear radiation anomaly. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
Tree marks and samples. Halt’s party examined abrasions on pine trees and discussed whether they faced the centre of the suspected landing area. The tape records comments about sap, samples, photographs and “heat reflection” seen through a starlight scope. Ridpath’s analysis argues that the tree marks were axe cuts made by foresters to mark trees for felling, and that the starlight scope was an image intensifier rather than an infrared heat detector, making “heat” language questionable. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
Animal noises and the forest setting. The tape also captures a more human detail: the men heard strange sounds from what Halt described as barnyard animals, and the atmosphere of the forest clearly affected the party’s reactions. Sceptical accounts often point out that muntjac deer and other nocturnal animals can make startling noises; believers tend to read the animal disturbance as another sign that something unusual was present. The tape does not settle that dispute, but it shows how a cold, dark, noisy forest could amplify uncertainty. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
The sighting phase began when one of the party pointed out a light through the trees. Halt’s tape records a “strange small red light”, initially estimated as perhaps a quarter to half a mile away, on a bearing of about 110 to 120 degrees. As the group moved out from the woods, Halt described a flashing red or yellowish light ahead, pieces apparently shooting off it, and an “eye winking” appearance when viewed through the starlight scope. Later, after crossing fields, he reported multiple lights, strobe-like flashes, half-moon shapes, coloured lights, and finally an object to the south that appeared to send a beam down towards the ground. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
Those descriptions are why Halt’s night remains so powerful in public memory. The language is immediate and unpolished. Halt sounds puzzled, sometimes excited, and at one point says the scene is “unreal”. At the same time, the account is observational rather than conclusive: the tape gives bearings, impressions and reactions, but it does not provide photographs, radar data, recovered material, or a clear identification of an object. The most valuable thing it supplies is not certainty, but a rare real-time record of trained personnel trying to make sense of ambiguous stimuli. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
Why the Recording Matters
The Halt tape matters because it is a near-contemporary record rather than a polished recollection created decades later. Wikimedia Commons describes the audio as a declassified Ministry of Defence document made by Halt during the second sighting, lasting under 18 minutes but covering activity over several hours because the recorder was switched on and off. That pattern explains both its strength and its limitation: it catches live reactions, but it is not continuous surveillance. [Wikimedia Commons]commons.wikimedia.orgCommons File:Rendelsham.oggWikimedia CommonsFile:Rendelsham.ogg - Wikimedia Commons…
For supporters of the case’s significance, the tape is compelling because it places a senior officer in the field with a team, instruments and named observations. The Guardian’s 2026 long-form account summarised Halt’s night as the moment when the party took Geiger counter readings, examined indentations and tree marks, then reported lights over fields and towards the base. Former MoD official Nick Pope has argued that Rendlesham is unusually strong because of military witnesses, physical-trace claims and declassified documents whose provenance is not seriously in dispute. [The Guardian]theguardian.comOpen source on theguardian.com.
For sceptics, the same tape is valuable because it gives testable details. Ridpath’s analysis focuses on timing, direction, instrument interpretation and local geography. He argues that the red flashing light seen through the trees aligns with Orford Ness lighthouse, and that the interval between calls of “there it is” on the tape matches the lighthouse’s five-second flash cycle. He also points to first-night witness statements describing a beacon or lighthouse-like light in the same general direction. [Wayback Machine]web.archive.orgWayback Machine Rendlesham Forest UFO – the Halt tape analysedWayback Machine Rendlesham Forest UFO – the Halt tape analysed
The later sky lights are also contested. Halt’s memo says three star-like objects were seen: two to the north and one to the south, about 10 degrees above the horizon, moving sharply and showing red, green and blue lights. It adds that the southern object remained visible for two to three hours and appeared to beam down light from time to time. Sceptical interpretations identify these later lights as bright stars or ordinary astronomical objects distorted by atmospheric effects and by observation through optical equipment. The memo gives enough detail to make those explanations discussable, but not enough to make them unchallengeable. [nicap.org]nicap.orgThe Halt MemoThe Halt Memo
The tape also helps separate the stronger record from later embellishment. Halt’s own 2010 affidavit and later interviews included more dramatic claims, including a laser-like beam landing near the party and beams reportedly directed towards the weapons storage area. Ridpath has criticised those later additions as inconsistent with the original tape and memo. Even readers who find Halt sincere have to distinguish between the contemporaneous record, the 1981 memo, and later recollections shaped by decades of argument, documentaries and public retelling. What the Evidence Can and Cannot Show
Halt’s night in the forest is often treated as the strongest part of the Rendlesham case because it has three qualities many UFO reports lack: a senior military witness, a formal memo, and an audio recording made during the investigation. The National Archives confirms the official existence of Halt’s correspondence and the broader public interest that followed, while also emphasising that its record of the event itself is essentially a single-sheet report amid later files of enquiries and correspondence. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National Archives UFO reportsThe National ArchivesUFO reports - The National Archives…
The evidence can show that Halt and his party investigated a real location, examined real marks, took instrument readings and saw lights they found unusual. It can also show that the experience was not invented years later: the memo and tape preserve core claims close to the time. Forestry England’s public UFO Trail material reflects how deeply this episode has entered the local landscape, presenting the area as a walk where visitors can read the story and consider the reports for themselves. [Home | Forestry England]forestryengland.ukHome | Forestry England
What the evidence cannot do is identify a craft. The recording does not contain images of an object; the radiation readings are disputed; the tree and ground marks are ambiguous; and several of the observed lights have plausible conventional candidates. The official UK response was not that the mystery had been solved, but that it had no apparent defence significance. That distinction is important: “not investigated further as a defence matter” is not the same as “proved mundane”, but it is also not an official endorsement of an extraordinary object. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National Archives UFO reportsThe National ArchivesUFO reports - The National Archives…
The best reading of Halt’s night is therefore neither dismissal nor proof. It is a compact case study in how evidence behaves under pressure. A senior officer’s presence raises the evidential stakes; the tape gives the case immediacy; the memo gives it official form. Yet the same materials expose the weaknesses: uncertain distances, intermittent recording, low and variable readings, later date errors, and interpretations that changed over time. Halt’s forest investigation remains central to Rendlesham because it is the episode where the mystery is most clearly documented — and where documentation still leaves the central question unresolved.
