Do Halt's Radiation Readings Prove Anything?
The radiation readings are among the memo's most debated details, but the document does not turn them into proof of a landed craft.

Introduction
The radiation readings recorded by Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt are among the most frequently cited pieces of physical evidence from the Rendlesham Forest incident. They appear in Halt’s January 1981 memorandum to the Ministry of Defence and are often presented as proof that something extraordinary landed in the forest. The memo itself, however, supports a much narrower conclusion.
What the readings show is that measurable radiation levels were recorded at specific ground marks and on part of a nearby tree. What they do not show is the source of that radiation, whether it was unusual for the area, or whether it was connected to a landed craft. The significance of the measurements depends heavily on the instrument used, the baseline levels available for comparison, and the absence of formal scientific controls. As a result, the readings remain part of the Rendlesham story, but not a decisive proof of what happened there. What the Memo Says About the Ground Readings
Halt’s memorandum records that three shallow depressions were found at a location where personnel believed an object had been observed. According to the memo, radiation checks conducted the following night produced beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgens, with peak readings in the depressions and near the centre of the triangular pattern they formed. The memo also notes readings of roughly 0.05–0.07 on one side of a nearby tree facing the depressions. These details matter because they are among the few physical measurements documented in the official record. Unlike witness recollections added years later, the readings were reported by a serving deputy base commander shortly after the event and became part of the Ministry of Defence file. However, the memo reports the measurements without interpreting them. It does not state that the readings were dangerous, extraordinary, or evidence of a spacecraft. It records observations rather than conclusions. Why the Numbers Need Context
The central problem is that a radiation reading by itself says very little. To know whether a measurement is significant, investigators need reliable background levels, calibrated instruments, repeat measurements and controls from comparable locations.
Accounts based on the Halt investigation indicate that readings around 0.07 milliroentgens per hour were found in the depressions, while nearby areas measured approximately 0.03–0.04 milliroentgens per hour. A similar elevated reading was reportedly detected elsewhere in the forest, away from the alleged landing site. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident
Supporters of the UFO interpretation have argued that the higher readings at the depressions suggest a physical event occurred there. Critics counter that naturally varying background radiation can produce differences of this kind and that finding comparable readings elsewhere weakens the claim that the measurements uniquely identify a landing location. [Wikipedia+2Morbid Kuriosity]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident
Another issue concerns the measuring equipment. The investigation used an AN/PDR-27 military radiation survey meter. Critics have argued that the instrument was designed primarily for detecting comparatively high levels of radiation associated with military contamination concerns rather than for precise measurement of low-level environmental background radiation. If so, small variations near the lower end of its scale become difficult to interpret confidently. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comcan have natu- rally occurring radioactive.Read more…
What the Readings Can Prove
The radiation evidence can support several limited conclusions.
First, it confirms that Halt’s team conducted radiation checks during the investigation and recorded numerical results rather than merely claiming that radiation was present. The readings are documented in the memorandum and echoed in the contemporaneous audio recordings often known as the Halt Tape. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDA nearby tree had moderate (0.05–0.07) readings on the side of the tree toward the depres…
Second, the readings indicate that measurable differences existed between some points in the surveyed area. The depressions and part of the nearby tree produced readings that investigators considered noteworthy enough to record. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDA nearby tree had moderate (0.05–0.07) readings on the side of the tree toward the depres…
Third, the measurements help explain why the incident attracted attention beyond a simple report of lights in the sky. Physical traces and instrument readings gave the case an evidential dimension that many UFO reports lack. [The National Archives]nationalarchives.gov.ukThe National ArchivesUFO reportsEarly letters regarding UFO sightings · Correspondence on the Rendlesham Forest incident · Documents on U…
These are legitimate evidential points. They show that the investigation involved more than eyewitness testimony alone.
What the Readings Cannot Prove
The radiation data cannot establish that an unidentified craft landed in Rendlesham Forest.
The measurements do not identify a source. Radiation can originate from natural environmental variation, local soil composition, contamination from ordinary human activity, or other causes. The readings themselves contain no information capable of distinguishing among those possibilities. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comcan have natu- rally occurring radioactive.Read more…
The data also cannot demonstrate that the site had been exposed to unusually high radiation. Debate over the figures has persisted largely because there was no comprehensive scientific survey establishing what constituted normal background levels at that exact location under controlled conditions. Later critics argued that the recorded values were consistent with ordinary environmental radiation rather than evidence of an extraordinary event. [Ian Ridpath+2The Times]ianridpath.comIan RidpathRendlesham Forest UFO – the radiation readingsThe readings are simply background levels and do not support the claim that anyt…
Nor do the readings establish a causal connection between the depressions and any observed lights. Even if the measurements were genuinely elevated, the data alone do not show that the depressions were created by a craft, that the radiation resulted from a craft, or that the two observations were related. Those links require assumptions beyond what the measurements themselves demonstrate. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDA nearby tree had moderate (0.05–0.07) readings on the side of the tree toward the depres…
Most importantly, the radiation evidence cannot distinguish between competing explanations of the broader incident. Whether one favours a UFO interpretation, a combination of misidentified lights and environmental effects, or some other explanation, the readings by themselves do not resolve the question. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathRendlesham Forest UFO – the radiation readingsThe readings are simply background levels and do not support the claim that anyt…
How the Readings Shaped Later Claims
The radiation measurements became influential because they appeared to provide physical evidence in a case otherwise dominated by witness testimony. In later retellings, the existence of recorded radiation was often condensed into a simpler claim that “radiation was found at the landing site”.
That simplification obscured an important distinction. The memo reports readings; it does not claim scientific proof of a landing. Over time, debates shifted from whether radiation was measured—which is largely undisputed—to whether the measurements were meaningful evidence of an anomalous event. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDA nearby tree had moderate (0.05–0.07) readings on the side of the tree toward the depres…
This is why the radiation issue remains one of the most contested elements of the Rendlesham case. Believers see the readings as corroborating physical traces. Sceptics view them as ordinary environmental measurements later invested with greater significance than the data can support. Both sides agree on the existence of the readings; they disagree about what those numbers mean. In the end, Halt’s radiation readings occupy an intermediate position in the evidence. They are stronger than a rumour and weaker than a scientific demonstration. They show that investigators detected and recorded measurable radiation differences at the site, but they do not establish what caused those differences, nor do they provide proof that an unidentified craft landed in Rendlesham Forest.
