The walkers may feel they have covered substantial ground while receiving very little information about the actual distance to the light. If the light remains visible at roughly the same apparent size and brightness, it can seem as though it is withdrawing ahead of them.

The forest environment did more than affect what witnesses saw. It also affected how different witnesses experienced the same event.

Individuals walking only a short distance apart may not share identical sight lines. One person may have a clear view down a track while another sees only trees. A light visible through a narrow opening can therefore appear bright and distinct to one observer and invisible to another. As the group moves, those viewing conditions constantly change.

This helps explain why some Rendlesham testimonies emphasise a structured object, others focus on coloured lights, and others describe a distant flashing source. Different observers were often viewing the scene from different positions, at different moments, through different gaps in the plantation. Under those conditions, distance becomes surprisingly difficult to judge. A fixed light can seem mobile. A distant light can seem nearby. An object that appears to be retreating may simply be maintaining its position while the observer’s route bends through the woodland. The result is a setting in which sincere witnesses can report dramatic changes in the apparent behaviour of lights even when the visual scene is being shaped as much by the forest itself as by the source being observed.
