Introduction

For believers who argue that the Rendlesham Forest incident involved a structured craft rather than distant lights, no document is more important than Charles Halt’s memorandum of 13 January 1981. Known simply as the “Halt memo”, it created the official paper trail for the case and placed a description of a metallic, triangular object into a military record. Unlike later books, television interviews or witness recollections, the memo was written by the deputy base commander of RAF Bentwaters and sent through official channels to the British Ministry of Defence. Its significance is not that it proves a craft landed in the forest, but that it preserved a craft-like description in a contemporaneous government document that has remained central to the debate ever since. What the memo recorded about the object

Halt’s memorandum was titled Unexplained Lights and summarised reports from security personnel as well as observations made during his own investigation. The most frequently cited passage describes patrolmen approaching a luminous object in the forest and observing something “metallic in appearance and triangular in shape”. According to the memo, the object measured roughly two to three metres across its base, displayed a pulsing red light on top and blue lights beneath, and appeared either to hover or rest on short supports before moving away through the trees. For supporters of the structured-craft interpretation, this wording is crucial. It is not a later memoir, a second-hand retelling or a sensational newspaper account. It is the language chosen by a senior USAF officer when reporting events to another government department. The description is specific enough to suggest shape, apparent material composition and lighting configuration rather than merely an unidentified glow. The memo also records physical observations that believers view as supporting a tangible object. Halt reported three ground depressions arranged in a triangular pattern, damage to nearby trees and elevated radiation readings at certain points compared with surrounding areas. Whether those findings have ordinary explanations remains disputed, but their inclusion reinforced the impression that personnel were investigating something thought to have occupied a physical location rather than simply watching lights in the sky. Importantly, the document did not stop with the first-night account. It also described later observations by Halt and his team, including a flashing red light moving through the forest and bright objects seen in the sky. These later observations are often interpreted very differently by believers and sceptics, but the triangular-object passage remains the memo’s most cited element because it is the section that most directly implies a structured craft. How the memo differs from later claims

One reason the Halt memo remains influential is that it sits between the sparse earliest witness statements and the much richer narratives that emerged years later. The document contains a craft description, but it is relatively restrained. It does not describe extraterrestrial occupants, advanced technology, telepathic communication or many of the more elaborate details that later became associated with Rendlesham. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDThe memo was dated 13 January 1981, over a fortnight after the events that are described…Published: January 1981

This distinction matters because critics often challenge later testimony by pointing out how witness accounts evolved over time. The memo provides a fixed point in the historical record. Whatever changes occurred in subsequent retellings, the document shows that a triangular, metallic-looking object had already entered the official narrative in January 1981. Believers therefore treat it as a more reliable benchmark than recollections offered decades later. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDThe memo was dated 13 January 1981, over a fortnight after the events that are described…Published: January 1981

At the same time, the memo is not identical to some later versions of the story. Researchers have noted that it was written more than two weeks after the events and contains date discrepancies that Halt himself later acknowledged. Because it is a retrospective summary rather than a contemporaneous field notebook, sceptics argue that it should not be treated as a verbatim record of what witnesses originally reported. The document therefore occupies an unusual position. It is more official and closer to the events than later recollections, yet it is still a summary produced after the fact. That tension explains why both supporters and critics devote so much attention to a single page of text.

Why official wording shapes the debate

The continuing importance of the Halt memo stems less from what it proves than from where it came from. Most UFO cases depend heavily on witness testimony. Rendlesham possesses something rarer: a formal memorandum on United States Air Force letterhead written by a serving lieutenant colonel and preserved within government archives. [Ian Ridpath+2TheJournal.ie]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDThe memo was dated 13 January 1981, over a fortnight after the events that are described…Published: January 1981

For believers, official documentation changes the evidential landscape. The argument is not merely that witnesses claimed to see a triangular craft. It is that a senior officer considered those claims important enough to record and forward through official channels. The memo became public through Freedom of Information processes and remains one of the primary documents associated with the incident. [Ian Ridpath+2Military Wiki]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDThe memo was dated 13 January 1981, over a fortnight after the events that are described…Published: January 1981

The British Ministry of Defence’s reaction is equally significant to the debate. Later parliamentary statements described the memorandum as a report of unusual lights that was reviewed by defence staff but judged to contain nothing of defence significance. No major follow-up investigation resulted from that assessment. Believers often interpret this as evidence that an extraordinary report was not examined thoroughly enough, while sceptics view it as an indication that officials saw no compelling reason to pursue the matter further. Because the memo is an official document rather than a personal recollection, its wording continues to anchor discussions about whether Rendlesham involved a structured craft. Supporters point to the phrases “metallic in appearance” and “triangular in shape” as evidence that the case was never merely about unidentified lights. Critics respond that the document records reported observations rather than verified facts. The debate persists largely because the memo occupies the narrow space between those two positions: it does not confirm a craft, but it officially records that military personnel believed they had encountered one.
