Introduction
The radiation readings taken around the three depressions in Rendlesham Forest are often presented as one of the strongest pieces of physical evidence in the UFO case. At first glance, the numbers appear to add scientific weight to the claim that an object landed in the forest. However, the significance of those readings depends less on the fact that radiation was detected and more on how the measurements compared with normal background levels, how the instrument worked, and whether proper controls were used.
When examined closely, the readings become a more ambiguous piece of evidence. They were real measurements recorded by military personnel, but the available records do not show the kind of systematic testing that would normally be required to establish that the site was unusually radioactive.
