Why early statements carry special value
In witness research, statements made close to an event are generally treated as more reliable than recollections produced years later. The reason is simple: memory changes over time. The Rendlesham case contains several unusually early records. What later accounts added or changed
The strongest example of narrative expansion concerns Sergeant Jim Penniston. In early records he was one of the servicemen investigating lights in the forest. Over time, however, his account became increasingly detailed.
Later interviews and publications introduced claims that he approached a structured craft, examined its surface at close range, touched it, observed unusual symbols and experienced effects that were not emphasised in the earliest publicly available documentation.
