This distinction is important because witnesses did not remain stationary. Security personnel moved from the base perimeter into woodland, across tracks, through clearings, and eventually into more open areas. Every change in position altered the available sight lines. A distant flashing beacon might vanish behind trees, reappear between trunks, then seem brighter in a clearing.

Forestry operations altered the landscape over time

Another complication is that Rendlesham Forest did not remain physically unchanged. Forestry plantations are routinely thinned, harvested, replanted, and reshaped. Modern visitors often encounter different sight lines from those that existed in 1980.

Former forestry personnel and later investigators have pointed out that changes in tree cover affect what can be seen from particular locations. Arguments based solely on present-day visibility therefore risk being misleading.
