Introduction
The radiation figures in Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt’s January 1981 memorandum are among the most frequently cited pieces of physical evidence in the Rendlesham Forest UFO incident. Yet the numbers themselves are often presented without context. The memo reported beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgens in and around three ground depressions and 0.05–0.07 on a nearby tree. Whether those values represent unusual radiation depends on the instrument used, the measurement scale, and the local background level. When those factors are examined, the readings appear far less dramatic than many later retellings suggest. The central question is not whether numbers were recorded—the memo clearly says they were—but whether the recorded values indicate anything genuinely anomalous. Were Halt’s Radiation Numbers Actually High?
What the memo reported
Halt’s memorandum states that investigators returned to the alleged landing site and checked the area for radiation. According to the document, “beta/gamma readings of 0.1 milliroentgens” were recorded, with peak values in the three depressions and near the centre of the triangle they formed. A nearby tree reportedly showed readings of 0.05–0.07 on the side facing the depressions. These figures became important because the memo is the principal official document associated with the case. The British Ministry of Defence retained the memo but there is no record of a subsequent official assessment of the radiation measurements themselves. A key point often overlooked is that the memo presents only a handful of numbers. It does not include a full survey, a detailed methodology, calibration information, uncertainty estimates, or systematic control measurements from comparable nearby locations. As a result, the figures can be reported accurately while still being difficult to interpret scientifically. Why Units and Rates Matter
The meaning of the radiation claim changes significantly depending on how the numbers are understood.
Many later discussions quote the memo’s “0.1 milliroentgen” figure without explaining whether it refers to an accumulated reading or a rate. Contemporary reconstructions based on the recorded investigation and the military radiation meter involved generally discuss values in milliroentgens per hour (mR/h). During the field investigation, readings around 0.03–0.04 mR/h were reportedly observed in ordinary areas, while peaks around 0.07 mR/h appeared at locations associated with the alleged landing site. That distinction matters because radiation is never zero. Natural background radiation varies from place to place due to soil composition, rocks, cosmic rays, moisture, and other environmental factors. A reading can be higher than a nearby spot without being hazardous or extraordinary. [Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIn short, there was no unusual radiation at the site.Read more…
One reason the numbers sound more impressive in isolation is that a value such as 0.1 can be described as “ten times background” if background is assumed to be around 0.01. Indeed, some commentators have noted that 0.1 is roughly ten times a nominal background figure. However, the actual readings reported during the field investigation appear to have been closer to 0.03–0.04 in surrounding areas and approximately 0.07 at the alleged hotspot. Under that comparison, the difference is much smaller—roughly a factor of two rather than a factor of ten. The practical implication is that the significance of the measurement depends heavily on which baseline is used.
The Instrument Problem
The radiation measurements were reportedly taken with an AN/PDR-27, a standard military radiation survey meter. This instrument was designed primarily for detecting and monitoring radioactive contamination, not for conducting precise environmental science studies at very low background levels. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident
At the low end of its range, small fluctuations can be difficult to interpret. Environmental radiation naturally varies over short distances, and readings can fluctuate moment to moment. Without a carefully controlled survey, it is challenging to determine whether a modest increase represents a meaningful anomaly or ordinary variation. This does not mean the readings were fabricated. Rather, it means that the numbers alone cannot establish that an unusual source of radiation was present. The instrument could detect radiation, but the available record does not demonstrate that the observed values exceeded what might reasonably occur in a natural outdoor setting. How Later Retellings Changed the Claim
Over time, the radiation figures became detached from their original context.
In many popular accounts, the claim evolved into a statement that radiation at the site was “eight to ten times background.” The phrase is memorable and sounds dramatic, but it shifts attention away from the actual recorded values and toward a relative comparison whose significance depends entirely on the chosen baseline. The surviving evidence paints a more nuanced picture:

- Comparable background readings in the surrounding area were not zero and appear to have been only modestly lower. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident
- A similar elevated reading was reportedly found some distance away from the alleged landing site, weakening the argument that the measurement uniquely marked a UFO landing location. [Wikipedia]WikipediaRendlesham Forest incidentRendlesham Forest incident
As the story spread through books, documentaries, and media coverage, the simplified “high radiation” narrative often overshadowed these qualifications. The result was a stronger public impression than the underlying dataset necessarily supports. What the Numbers Ultimately Show
The Halt memo unquestionably records radiation measurements, making them part of the original documentary record rather than a later embellishment. However, the figures do not by themselves demonstrate the presence of an exotic object or an unusual radioactive source. The available evidence suggests modest beta/gamma readings that were somewhat above nearby measurements but still within a range that critics argue is compatible with ordinary environmental background variation. [Ian Ridpath+2Ian Ridpath]ianridpath.comIan RidpathAppendix – Col Halt's memo to the MoDThis is the text of the single-page memo written by Lt Col Halt to the UK's Ministry of D…
For that reason, the radiation claim occupies an unusual position in the Rendlesham debate. It is neither a myth nor a decisive piece of physical proof. The numbers are real, but their interpretation depends on assumptions about units, instrument capability, and background levels—precisely the issues that continue to fuel disagreement over what the readings actually meant.
